Why Quarter Strength Reeds Are So Useful
Gonzalez Reeds was the first reed manufacturer to introduce micro strengths, naming them quarters. Why are they so important?
Choosing the right reed cut is important because when it comes to optimizing the performance of the reed, having the correct strength is crucial to the musician loving how they sound and feeling comfortable playing their instrument. However, this aspect can present challenges for us.
Manufacturers typically designate reeds within a general strength range, which can result in variations even among reeds labelled with the same strength. As a result, musicians may find that reeds of the same box can feel quite different in terms of how they feel in your mouth and as a result, we all know this can affect their performance due to these subtle variations.
This is why Gonzalez Reeds decided to worked hard to try to make a solution for this problem by incorporating reed strengths in quarters. By breaking down reed strength into smaller, more precise increments, we provide musicians with greater accuracy in their selection process in an innovative way. This approach helps to minimize the discrepancies that can occur with traditional strength ranges, making it easier for musicians to find reeds that work out, given all of the potential variables.
Because of our commitment and to quality, precision, and our premise to have musicians need met first, this is why we consider quarters so useful and important.
Quarter strengths are available in several Gonzalez Reeds models: GD and FOF for Bb Clarinet, as well as RC for Clarinet and Saxophone. Be sure to ask for them at your favorite brick and mortar or online music shop.
