Josué dos Santos

He is a saxophonist and flutist, member of two of the most important groups of instrumental music from Brazil. 

He began his studies during his adolescence, at the age of 14, and later he got in at the Free Music University. In there he was a member of the Tom Jobim Youth Orchestra, where he began his real professional career, playing alongside big names of Brazilian music, such as Dominguinhos, Alaíde Costa, Heraldo do Monte, Zimbo Trio, Arismar do Espirito Santo, among others. He also participated in important workshops: Charlie Haden, Joe Lovano, Moacir Santos, George Garzone, Joshua Redman, Dave Holland and Chris Potter.

Passionate about the saxophone and flute world, both classical and jazz music, and under the influence from both trends, Josué seeks to develop a language in Brazilian music, using the rhythms and repertoires of great composers. 

He participated in both national and international festivals: he played at the Jazz Entre Amigos and Jazz A La Calle festivals, in Uruguay; the San Vicente Jazz Festival in Mendoza and the Jazz Festival in Buenos Aires, both in Argentina; the Cartagena International Festival, Colombia, and the Brazilian Festival in Amsterdam, Netherlands.  In 2007, alongside the Brazilian Scandinavian Big Band, he participated in festivals in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. 

He has performed alongside great musicians, such as: César Camargo Mariano, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Paulinho da Viola, Hamilton de Holanda, Ohad Talmor and Paquito D’Rivera. In 2010 and 2012 he was a member of the Big Bang directed by Maria Schneider in São Paulo. He has performed alongside important orchestras like São Paulo Municipal Theater Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the University of São Paulo, Symphonic Jazz Orchestra of the State of São Paulo, among others. 

In 2017 he recorded alongside Hermeto Pascoal e Big Band the album “Naturaleza Universal”, which lead him to win a Latin Grammy for Best Jazz Record in 2018. 

He is part of the Ffaculty of the São Paulo State School of Music, where he teaches Improvisation, Joint Practice, Saxophone and Popular Flute.

Nowadays he is part of the Mantiqueira Band, Soundscape Big Band, Hermeto Pascoal e Big Band, Quebra Cuia Group, Sizão Machado Quartet, César Camargo Mariano Sextet, as well as being invited to work with musicians and bands from all over Brazil.
